What is a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)?

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the rate at which a person burns calories while at rest. Between 70 and 80% of all calories are burned under resting conditions. Knowledge of metabolic rate is vital to nutritional assessment, weight loss planning and care of various medical conditions.

How do we test your RMR?

In our medical clinic, we use a Calorimeter. You will be asked to recline in a comfortable chair for 10 minutes and breath through a mouthpiece. The Caloimeter measures the oxygen that the body consumes. Using this measurement it calculates a patient’s Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), commonly referred to as a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This result can be used to assist your dietitian in creating a nutrition plan that is suitable for your metabolism. The following video explains the dangers of following a menu plan that has not been specifically designed for you!
